Passenger Project

Passenger was a senior year group project in VC.
We as a team had the opportunity to decide whether
we wanted to start the project slated for the class or
conduct our own project regarding an issue of our
choosing. The group decided to choose an issue
that had relevance for the city of Indianapolis.

We chose the issue of public transportation.
This was because it was something that had an
impact on the local area and was an opportunity
to research something that deserved more
attention than it tended to receive.

What followed was a semester long project that
involved extensive research, group events with
local experts in the field, on site observations,
and experimentation which ultimately yielded an
awareness campaign that operated on a grass
roots level involving the actual people who depend
on the bus system in Indianapolis.

(Below) An invitation created to enlist the aid of
local experts in public transportation. These
included riders and those within the organization
of IndyGo, Indianapolis' current bus system.

(Below) Late into the process we developed a system
with the intent of getting the local people actively
involved in spreading the message that public trans-
portation is a vital part of the urban community. With
a three level system of internet, user, and environment
we planned on using this kit to install stickers in the
shape of bandaids which would lead people to the site
who could then voice their opinions to local legislature,
arguing for greater support of public transportation.

With the kit, it was planned that the stickers
would be placed around stops along the bus routes
that would attract attention. After the user visits the
site and uses its features to get involved they could
then order the kit for themselves and place the
stickers where they wanted. This put the control
of the message in the hands of the people and would
attribute to a healthy and honest spread of awareness.

Dollars for Scholars

A forth semester VC project, Dollars for Scholars
is an organization that uses a grass roots system to
generate funds for Indiana students to pursue their
education. The project consisted of an effort to
create more public awareness of the group through
a print based campaign.

After several meetings and developmental stages
the final print ads used on site photography in local
areas in Indianapolis.

'Technology' - Typography Book

The following project was an exercise in using image and
type together. The project was framed by developing a
thesis that addressed issues with the use of technology.

The issue that I arrived at was that over dependence on
technology leads greater society to become less aware
of the natural, practical world. Meaning that frivolous
pursuit of technological advancement has superseded
our culture's ability to relate to the world at a more
macro level.

The imagery used consists of rusted out metal evoking
the idea that technology is ultimately transient. Wires
continue into the text plane, framing and sometimes
obscuring the information.

The images below are of the completed book.

Teroldego Wine Label

As part of my classes later in the VC major, there
was a class known as Professional Practice. This was
a course that involved real work with local clients to
help us gain legitimate experience in the field.

One client of mine was Chateau Thomas Winery
based in Plainfield, Indiana. They had a project
ready for an original wine label for their new wine
titled 'Teroldego.' The basic concept behind the
label revolved around a story of Medieval Italy
which featured a battle with a dragon. The story
went that once the dragon was slain by the knight
it's blood hit the ground and sprouted grapevines.

It was from these grapes that a wine was created.
That wine would be represented by this release. The
story guided the visual exploration, and the following
sketches detail the different paths this idea took.

Taco Bell Research Project

This was a semester long project for the third semester
VC class at Herron. The project was intended to train us
students in due diligence by focusing on an organization
After weeks of research and several presentations out-
lining strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of the
organization we were then to bring together a process
book to illustrate our findings and present possible
solutions based on our collected data.

I chose Taco Bell as my organization.

Generally speaking, the information found dealt with
opinions regarding food quality, their hours, and the
impression of cheap comfort food among different
groups. Ultimately, the idea behind the data I collected
involved embracing those attributes in a way that
speaks to today's modern youth culture, who adapt
well to a self indulgent, tongue in cheek mindset.

(Below) Excerpts from the final process book including
key charts along with the visual / typographic styles
that were adopted to form the voice of this research.

I don't think that I can, actually.

Image Hybrid Project

This was a third semester assignment for the Image class at Herron.
The purpose of this project was to explore, experiment with, and
ultimately combine the imagery of three different subcultures. The
goal was to break down visual elements to their most basic form
and recombine them to create something new. The subcultures
I chose were Gamers, Rednecks, and Star Wars geeks.
